Our predator free campaign has now officially started! The traps have all been laid out around the course, assigned a number, and been randomly allocated to each of the sponsors. We have 52 member-purchased traps, with a further four donated. Of the total of 56, 35 have been laid around the perimeter of the course at spaces of between 90-100m, with 21 laid throughout the course in targeted locations. The DOC Ranger who gave us advice on placement, says we have "more than enough" to achieve our goal, which is very pleasing. The "DOC 200" traps have been baited with an egg, some chocolate buttons, and a piece of rabbit jerky, all designed to target rats, stoats and hedgehogs. Whilst the latter seem "cute" little animals, they predate on ground-dwelling birds' eggs, and they are officially classified as a targeted predator species. Our project has also been set up on a national database called Trap NZ, as part of the Predator Free 2050 initiative, where each trap has been logged as to its GPS location and will be updated for "kills". POSSUM CONTROL AREA (PCA) The HBRC has included us in the PCA. While we are officially just outside their designated area for this programme, they were sufficiently impressed with what we are doing that they offered to include the Club. The contractor has now installed 15 bait stations at various places. The bait used is the standard used for possum and rat control, called Brodificoum. It is a toxic poison in pellet form. The bait stations are nailed to trees about 2 metres above the ground. Warning signs will be going up very shortly but members please be aware of these stations if you are finding yourself amongst the trees! |
