Women's Update

Only a couple of weeks until the official start of winter and we’re still enjoying some fantastic weather. We certainly don’t have a lot to grumble about!

National Teams Qualifying: this was held earlier in the month at Hastings, and we were represented by Deb Hewitt, Marie Hope, Alison Graham and Annabelle Absolom. The team finished well in 3rd equal position. Thank you to everyone who donated items for the raffle basket, the raffles raised $1300 for HB Golf. Winners of raffle baskets were Jocelyn McClelland and Sue Agnew. The baskets are available to be collected from the office.

Pennants: The Bellbirds team had a massive 7-1 win against Dannevirke at Napier to make it 4 wins from 4 games. The Tuis were narrowly defeated 3 ½ – 4 ½ . The next round is here at Hastings on May 20th.

Match Play: It’s match play season again and matches are well underway. Thank you to everyone for playing their matches on time. We all lead busy lives and it really helps when all players are given the maximum time to play their matches.

Entries for the Marjory Holt Memorial Trophy (Silver) and Bronze 1 and 2 matches are now being taken. These are match-play on handicap, and the draw will be done at the end of the month.

Profitt Four Ball entries are also being taken, played in pairs with a combined handicap of no less than 37. This is a good competition to start with if you don’t have a lot of match play experience. If you don’t have a partner, add your name to the entry sheet and we will do our best to pair you up.

I know the sound of match play can be daunting to many, but don’t be put off. Match play can also be a lot of fun and is a good way to improve your game and rules knowledge. If deciphering the rules is overwhelming, start by reading the definitions in the back of the rule book, this will certainly help.

Hutchinson’s annual tournament: this is being held on Tuesday 28th May with a shotgun start at 9am. It is open to all Hastings women members, and there is also a 9 hole tournament. We hope to be able to add the 9 holers to the field at a time that will ensure you don’t finish too much earlier than the rest of the field so that you can stay for lunch and prize giving. This will depend on the size of the field and the number of 9 hole players, so please get your names on the entry sheet in the Ladies locker room. Entries close Friday May 24th. The cost is $25 which includes lunch, raffle tickets and the opportunity to win prizes over several categories.

Lucy May/Bays Bronze Interprovincial tournament

The following Hastings members have been selected to be part of the Hawkes Bay team playing in Gisborne on Monday May 27th:

Deb Hewitt, Robyn Stallard, Annabelle Absolom, Joanne Wheater, and Trish Macklow (reserve). Congratulations, and good luck in Gisborne.

Shootout: Don’t forget to get your shootout cards in, $20 to enter then $2 per card. Remember, you have the luxury of adding your cards after your round, so you are only paying to put good cards in.

Pace of Play: Yes, this old chestnut is rearing its head again. Just like driving our cars, we don’t all travel at exactly the same speed, but we need to find a happy medium so that the game can be enjoyable to all. Interestingly, and against the trend of golf courses worldwide, we get more complaints about too fast play, rather than too slow play. Some points to consider;

Too Fast: walking off in twos to the next tee should be done only when you need to make up time lost, not as a normal part of the game. Be mindful of your start time and tee off as close as possible to this time – starting early creates just as many issues and breaches the same rules of golf as teeing off late.

Too Slow: Do your best to get to your ball and be ready to play your shot as soon as possible. Apart from match play, Ready golf is now an accepted part of the game, keep the game going by playing your shot if you are ready and your partner isn’t. After finishing a hole, walk to the next tee and mark your card while others tee off. If you have lost time for whatever reason, this is the time to consider walking off in twos to make the time up.

As always, there is a lot happening at this time of year. The best way to keep track of all the competitions and events is to check your programme book and the calendar on the club’s website. If you’re not sure, please feel free to ask.

Happy golfing

Liz
