Women's Update

It’s been six weeks since my last newsletter, and didn’t things change in a hurry! All the best laid plans for the winter season have gone out the window, and we have been busy changing the program with the information we currently have. You will all be aware that it is difficult to make firm plans while the status continues to change rapidly. So, we will update you as and when we can, but be prepared for plans to change again at short notice. Here’s what we know so far:

Course Opening

It seems to have taken a while but yes, we have been given permission to play golf again. The course officially opens this Saturday May 2nd and I understand all available tee times are fully booked for Saturday. The current guidelines for playing have been well advertised on NZ Golf website and Hastings Golf Club newsletters. Rather than list them all again, please click here for all the information you need. It is vital that we all stick to the rules however strange they may appear. Spot checks are being carried out on golf courses already and we wouldn’t want to be the one course that spoiled it for everybody. Special thanks must go to Gordon and his team for working tirelessly to ready the course after the enforced closure. Please respect their distancing rules, and provide them right-of-way at all times.

Cancellations for the season

Pennants has been cancelled for the 2020 season as we have missed 3 rounds during levels 4 and 3, and with 9 rounds in total it was decided that it would be impossible to make up the lost rounds, especially with clubs now scrambling to fit in their own competitions.

National Teams Qualifying was due to be played on March 26th, and won’t be re-scheduled this year.

All Homelinks events (9 and 18-hole) have been cancelled, this includes Coronation Medal, Aotearoa Cup, Veterans Trophy, Best Gross Cup, the Nancy MacCormick Foursomes, the 9-hole Sue Bunt Salver and the Junior Best Gross and Best Net.

Still Going Ahead at this stage

Crossman Cup, at the moment, is still likely to be played however a firm decision will be made towards the end of May. Watch this space.

Lucy May/Bays Bronze a decision will also be made towards the end of May.

We should still be able to fit in the clubs’ full winter program although most of the dates will change. We don’t expect to be fully underway until mid-June which should give everyone an opportunity for a few rounds before competitions start.

LGU events can be played at each clubs’ discretion, and I have left them in the Hastings program for now.

World Handicapping System

While we were all at home practicing our chipping and putting, NZ Golf rolled out the new system. When the course opens on Saturday there won’t be any opportunity to print or return a score card, so we will have to wait a little longer to check out how the new system affects our handicaps.

Match Play competitions

Campbell Cup, Molly and Margaret prize, and Bill and Mary Cup. The draw for these competitions was put up about a week before lockdown, so it is likely that many of you have missed seeing the draw. Play-by deadlines have also come and gone and these will be moved accordingly. I hope to have this competition run during late June and July, and will provide a copy of the draw soon.

Margery Holt, Bronze 1 and 2, and Profitt 4Ball

Entries will close at the end of May, with matches being played between June and September.

Club Champs

The final for the club champs is likely to be moved to Sunday November 1st, with matches played between August and October.

I would hope that given the unusual times we are currently facing that every effort is made to find a mutually agreeable time to play matches, this may have to be a time you don’t normally play. Please also don’t stand on ceremony and wait for the name on top to contact you – they may not be able to check the noticeboard often and it would help to get matches played quickly rather than waiting until the last date.

New Facebook Page

As it may be some time before we are able to use the locker room noticeboard to provide you with information, I have created a private Facebook group to keep you updated with all the news. For those of you with Facebook accounts, search for HGC Women and request to join. The group will be in addition to the regular emailed newsletters, so don’t worry if you don’t use Facebook.

I hope to add match-play competitions as events on this platform to get early numbers which will help with calculating play-by dates. These will be added soon. If you’re not on Facebook, please feel free to ring, text or email me to let me know which competitions you would like to enter.

Stay safe, and enjoy whatever you are managing to do in your bubble.

Regards, Liz
