Junior News

The July School Holidays have been a busy time for our Juniors, with them having the opportunity to play 6 top golf courses. 

Week 1

They headed over for the Taranaki Age Groups at New Plymouth and Fitzroy Golf Clubs.  There was a field of 108 players with 80 from outside the region.

Wellington Eagles Paraparaumu Beach Junior Golf Open – 7^th July

2nd U13 Boys Gross - Luke Jarvis - (Tied 1^st, but lost on countback)

2nd U19 Boys Stableford - George Bidwell

4th U19 Boys Stableford - George Pogson

Wellington Age Groups Strokeplay – 8-9th July at Royal Wellington

This event was made up of 90 players from Manawatu, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, Taupo, Auckland and the South Island. 

1^st Under 13 Boys Gross - Luke Jarvis

4^th Under 16 Boys Stableford - George Pogson

3^rd Under 19 Girls Stableford - Niamh McGillicuddy

5^th Under 19 Girls Gross - Ruby Jarvis

The Wellington Stokeplay also doubled as qualifying for the Wellington Under 19 Matchplay Championship.   Luke Jarvis qualified as 9^th Seed and Ruby Jarvis 6^th Seed.   Luke lost his first round, won his 2^nd round in the plate section but lost his next match to Hugo Sidford (Wellington) who went onto win the Plate.  Ruby lost 2 down in the first round (no Plate section for the girls division).    George Bidwell and George Pogson narrowly missed qualifying for the matchplay.

Team Recognition

New Zealand Golf Course Superintendent Association - Distinguished Service Award 2025 - Gordon Trembath

The NZGCSA Distinguished Service Award seeks to recognise an individual who has given outstanding service to the golf turf industry within New Zealand.

Congratulations to one of our own, Gordon Trembath who is the recipient of the 2025 award.  The award was presented to Gordon during the Fine Turf Seminar in Rotorua last week.

Congratulations Gordon, your loyalty and commitment to our club and the industry is inspiring.

New Course Rating

To ensure handicaps accurately reflect each member’s playing ability, we have recently completed a review of our course rating. One of the factors in this rating is the rough. Before the irrigation system was installed, the rough was less dense, resulting in a lower rough rating. With irrigation now established, the rough is more consistent and denser, which has increased the course's difficulty.

As a result, both the course rating and slope rating have increased. We haven’t made the course harder, but we have updated the data to reflect how the course currently plays. This ensures everyone’s handicap is calculated as fairly and accurately as possible.

What this means for you is that your score differential (used for handicap) will be slightly lower than before on our course (you can find out more about your score differential if you have a look at your scores on dot golf). So, if you keep posting the same scores as before, and only play on our course, your handicap might come down a touch.

SG Jones Junior Fund - Applications Now Open

The SG Jones Junior Fund was established in 1985 to honour the commitment of the late Stuart Jones to junior golf development at Hastings Golf Club, providing financial assistance to help our young members enhance their golfing potential.

The Fund is invested through the Hawke’s Bay Foundation, ensuring sustainable growth to support juniors each year. Funds are used to assist with coaching, equipment, tournament fees, and travel expenses to help juniors take their game to the next level.

We are now inviting applications for the upcoming year. One junior member (aged 18 or under) will be selected, based on golfing achievements, commitment to the game, academic performance, and potential for improvement.

Interested juniors should submit their application, including personal, academic, and golfing information, along with a short statement on how this funding would help their development.

Applications close 14 September 2025.
