May 2026
The Hastings Golf Club Private Plan Change hearing has now officially closed, and it has been advised by the Commissioners appointed by the Council. We are hoping for a positive outcome with a decision not too far away. We will, of course, keep you informed.
This month the management committee agreed the way ahead for the forward tee proposal which was approved earlier in 2025. The fact that the funds needed to carry out this initiative were not available in the last financial year meant the project was delayed. This allowed us to study how the new tees might be placed and on which holes. It was decided to ask Greg Turner, a professional course designer with a vested interest in our club, our course and our club’s future, to guide us through the forward tee project. He spent time on the course in April and as a result, Ben and his team are now ready to commence the project.
Greg’s advice was that rather than a new set of coloured tees, on some holes the yellow tees will move forward. The white tees on those holes may move forward and this will be the decision of Ben and the two Club Captains. The blue and black tees will remain where they are. As each forward tee is completed Brett will re-rate that hole. The work will commence later this month with the 13th and 14th tees, followed by the 1st and 6th. Other (but not all) tees will then be costed into the budget for the next financial year. Holes 3, 4, 5 and 8 will remain unchanged as they will be incorporated into the new course.
What is the rationale for the forward tees? The average handicap for our women members is 28. Greg made the comment that it is a difficult course for high handicappers and was completely in favour of the forward tee project. The game should be enjoyable for ALL of our members and visitors. We also need to encourage new golfers and those with high handicaps and slow swing speeds to play the game without the challenge and frustration of a long tee shot just to get to the fairway. The new forward tees will also speed up play. Can I emphasise that members, regardless of gender, should play off the tees that best suit their handicap.
Ben is also very much looking forward to separation between all tee blocks which will make maintaining the tees so much easier.
A special mention to our junior member Ruby Jarvis on her exceptional round last Saturday scoring a gross 69. Well done Ruby!
The longest day is just three weeks away. That’s when winter really starts. Keep warm and enjoy your golf.
