Bee Safety
We have received reports of increased bee activity around the 16th hole, with a few members unfortunately being stung.
We have had the area inspected by bee professionals, who have confirmed there are no nests in the immediate area. The activity is likely seasonal, with bees actively pollinating during spring.
While there is no identified nest, we ask members to take extra care around the 16th hole and remain mindful of bee activity throughout the course at this time of year.
Members with known bee allergies are encouraged to take the necessary personal precautions, including carrying any prescribed medication when playing.
Course Maintenance & Spraying
We have recently installed a course maintenance information sign near the 1st and 10th holes. The course team will use this to keep members informed of maintenance activities taking place, particularly any spraying programmes.
Spraying is a regular part of maintaining the course, and some of the products used require certain safety precautions.
We encourage members to make a habit of checking the sign before heading out to play and to follow any instructions or restrictions advised by the course team.
As a general reminder, golf balls and equipment regularly come into contact with treated turf. Members are encouraged to be mindful of hand hygiene, particularly washing or sanitising their hands before eating or handling food while on the course.
Members are reminded that being aware of course maintenance activities and following any advised precautions is an important part of taking responsibility for their own personal safety.
Spring Course Maintenance
With spring growth now well underway, the course team is entering one of its busiest periods of the year. The combination of warmer temperatures and changing weather conditions means grass growth can vary considerably, and maintenance schedules may need to be adjusted at short notice.
With a busy golfing calendar, the team will continue to work around play wherever practical. However, there will be times when essential maintenance needs to take priority to ensure the course is presented and maintained to the best possible standard.
A friendly reminder that greenkeepers have right of way on the course, and we ask all members to be mindful of staff and machinery operating while they play.
Junior & Representative Golf – Great Results from Our Members
It has been a busy few weeks for a number of our members competing in junior and representative events, with some excellent results worth recognising.
Louie Williams – AIMS Games
Congratulations to Louie Williams on an outstanding performance at the Zespri AIMS Games, representing Havelock North Intermediate.
Louie finished tied for 5th overall in the 18-hole Division One competition, with a gross total of 226 (+11) over three rounds. His final round of 69 was the lowest individual round recorded throughout the tournament, a fantastic achievement!
Ruby Jarvis & Niamh McGillicuddy – HB Junior Interprovincial Team
Congratulations also to Ruby Jarvis and Niamh McGillicardy on their selection for the Hawke's Bay Junior Interprovincial team.
The girls travelled to Rotorua to compete against eight other regional teams, with both producing some excellent individual performances.
Shand Cup & Sybil Green Salver
Over the weekend of 17–18 October, Hastings Golf Club hosted the annual Shand Cup (Men) and Sybil Green Salver (Women) quadrangular tournaments, with representative teams from Hawke's Bay, Wellington, Manawatu-Whanganui and Taranaki competing.
Wellington took out both titles; however, it was pleasing to see a number of Hastings members representing Hawke's Bay on their home course.
Thank you to our course staff, volunteers and members who assisted with hosting the weekend. The course was presented in excellent condition despite the rain, and we appreciate everyone's contribution to another successful representative event.
Well done to all our members representing the Club and Hawke's Bay. It is always pleasing to see Hastings Golf Club members performing well at both junior and senior representative levels.
SG Jones Junior Fund - Applications Now Open
The SG Jones Junior Fund was established in 1985 to honour the commitment of the late Stuart Jones to junior golf development at Hastings Golf Club, providing financial assistance to help our young members enhance their golfing potential.
The Fund is invested through the Hawke’s Bay Foundation, ensuring sustainable growth to support juniors each year. Funds are used to assist with coaching, equipment, tournament fees, and travel expenses to help juniors take their game to the next level.
We are now inviting applications for the upcoming year. One junior member (aged 18 or under) will be selected, based on golfing achievements, commitment to the game, academic performance, and potential for improvement.
Interested juniors should submit their application, including personal, academic, and golfing information, along with a short statement on how this funding would help their development.
Applications close 16 November 2026.
For application forms CLICK HERE and for further details on funding rules and administration, please contact Michelle Campbell manager@hastingsgolfclub.co.nz.
This is a wonderful opportunity to support and celebrate the future of golf at Hastings Golf Club.

Sean Towndrow – Head Professional Appointment
We are delighted to share the news that our former Assistant Professional, Sean Towndrow, has been appointed Head Professional at Wanaka Golf Club, commencing in March 2027.
It's a fantastic opportunity for Sean, and we couldn't be happier for him as he takes on this next chapter in his career.
Sean will still be around Bridge Pa until he makes the move south, so please take the opportunity to congratulate him if you see him.
