Predator Free Update
|
August Report supplied by Murray McNae: It has been another relatively quiet month with only 8 kills, one less than last month. This can only be a good sign though in that we are really getting on top of these predators, and of significance, only one of the kills in the month was a rat. However, there has been an odd couple of events... Firstly, one of our lady members, while playing the 15th hole, had the misfortune to find her ball resting on a dead possum - obviously one that had gorged itself on the "tasty" pellets that are served up for them in the bait stations! Unfortunately, in the Rules, a "dead animal" is classified as a loose impediment, so moving this "loose impediment" would have caused the ball to move, thus incurring a penalty stroke. So, her options were play the ball as it lies, or declare the ball unplayable incurring a one-stroke penalty. To some this might seem unfair but think of it as another loose impediment such as a fallen branch with the ball sitting in or on that. We don't know the outcome of the lady's decision whether she chose the option to “play the ball as it lies" though! The second event involved the capture in Trap No. 10, located to the left of the 11th fairway near the boundary fence, of one small rabbit! Perhaps it thought the trap was a nice burrow... On the subject of rabbits, given there has been very limited success in catching stoats, it was decided to "change things up" so a freshly-killed and dressed rabbit was obtained, and portions of rabbit meat were spread around 80 percent of the traps in the hope to lure stoats to their favourite meal. Alas, none were caught. Two traps also registered their first kill - Trap No 40, assigned to Greta Crist, located alongside the practice fairway and Trap No 51, assigned to Martin Marshall, located on the right of the 1st fairway, both caught a mouse. A significant development this month has been the installation of two ponds, paid for by member donations, to provide water on the course for birds - something lacking thus far. A solar-powered pump re-circulates the water through a birdbath. Some water lilies donated by a lady member are now also sitting in these ponds waiting warmer weather before providing lots of colour to these water features. One pond is in the area behind the men's 7th tee on the plateau above and behind the 16th green (you can see the solar panel from this green). The second pond is located on the northern side of the "Hole-In-One Garden" behind the 13th tee. The third and last pond will be installed shortly on the northern side of the "Grieve Garden", to the left of the 1st tee. To offer even more attraction for birds, 10 nectar feeders and 10 seed cones (also provided by donation) have been spread around the course. They have proved a massive success, with some of the nectar feeders being emptied in a little over a day. Given their "popularity", these nectar feeders really need replenishment every week, so in this regard we need some member volunteers to help on an "opt-in" basis, i.e. enter your name on a shared on-line calendar on a day/time that suits you. We have two ladies so far but another two or three for the team would really help. One circuit in a golf cart takes only about an hour, and it's a one-person job so with just a few extra volunteers it may only be once every 3 or 4 weeks for each person. Contact Michelle if you are interested. Updated kills to end of August (note only traps with kills are displayed) Trap | Name | Total | 46 | Arthur Ormond | 9 | 13 | Sue & Murray McNae | 7 | 27 | Heather & Rupert Gregory | 7 | 34 | Philippa Cook | 7 | 17 | Deb Hewitt | 6 | 33 | Bob & Bernadette Bishop | 6 | 14 | Alistair Holder | 5 | 53 | Peter Clayton | 4 | 1 | Ian Shears | 4 | 4 | Mike Harris | 4 | 15 | Justin Campbell | 3 | 16 | Brett & Shelley Allan | 3 | 32 | Robyn & Graeme Bell | 3 | 23 | Claire Turner | 3 | 28 | T, R, M & P Ormond | 3 | 31 | Shaun Driscoll | 3 | 2 | Phil Teague | 2 | 12 | John Stace | 2 | 19 | Rodney Williams | 2 | 30 | Greg Driscoll | 2 | 54 | Mick Ormond | 2 | 10 | Russell Farmery | 2 | 43 | Paul & Victoria Williams | 2 | 21 | Richard Watson | 1 | 25 | Alison Forsyth/Jo Allen | 1 | 49 | Wayne Yule & Lynne Roberts | 1 | 50 | Duncan Priest | 1 | 26 | Julie Connolly | 1 | 6 | Di Bolton/Barb Griffiths | 1 | 8 | Barry & Margaret Musson | 1 | 38 | Jane & Murray Ravenscroft | 1 | 52 | Guy Turner | 1 | 40 | Greta Crist | 1 | 51 | Martin Marshall | 1 | |
