Dear Guest,

Pennants Finals 2022

The Golf HB Interclub Men’s Pennants finals were held at the Waipukurau Golf Club on Sunday 15 May 2022.

The golf course was prepared in excellent condition and the weather played its part with no rain, although forecast, and with little wind.

The Hastings Golf Club had three teams make the finals. They were:

Championship Division Two

The Champs Two team played Hawkes Bay GC and retained the Pennant by a margin of 6.5 wins to 2.5 losses.  The finals team was Dennis Hirschman, Paul Clothier, Martin White, Aaron Shirley, Peter Marffy & Dave Shaw, supported by other players through the qualifying rounds.

Championship Division Three

The Champs Three team of Luke McLeod, Angus Henderson, Steven Boys, Andrew Atkinson, Kris Bower & Stephen Domino played a tight fought final against the Maraenui Golf Club right down to the last singles match ending on the 18th which was halved resulting in both teams scoring 4.5 points each.  The Hastings team won the Pennant as they had beaten the Maraenui team in the qualifying rounds.

Handicap Division One

Heading into the last qualifying round the team was positioned third needing a win against the Wairoa side to progress.  The round was played at the Napier GC and with four of the matches being decided on the 18th hole the Hastings team prevailed winning 5/4.  The finals team of Jamie Gayler, Andy Nagy, Gavin Milley, Tim Southward, Tony Johnson & Matthew Miller played the Napier GC team and with majority of matches going as far as the 17th hole and beyond, Napier won the pennant 6/3.

Many thanks to the Men Pennant team members who represented the Club during the event in 2022 and congratulations to the winning teams.

Tim Southward

Men’s Club Captain

Expressions of Interest in the Role of Junior Golf Co-ordinator

As you may have seen around the club in the past few months, we have had an explosion of junior golfers which has been amazing. Hastings Golf Club welcomes all junior members as they are the future of our club.

We are seeking a Junior Golf Co-ordinator or two people as a shared role from within our membership. The role of the Junior Co-ordinator is one of the most rewarding roles because of the impact it has on developing both golf and life skills of young people. The Junior Coordinator should ideally be a volunteer from within the male or female adult membership. The person who undertakes this role will be compensated for their efforts.

The role entails:

Hours per week: Sunday’s 10:30am - 2:30pm (4 hours)

The occasional change in time during Future events 8 times a year 1:00pm - 5:00pm

The goal would be to have a team of juniors playing in the Hawkes Bay men’s pennants competition in the future. Possibly 2023!

Working alongside our SpecialTee Golf coaches and providing feedback to shape our program to be the best in New Zealand.

Competition support

Teeing our junior golfers off Sunday mornings as per times below.

18 holes - 10:30am

9 holes - 11:15am

4 holes 12:00pm

Once the juniors have teed off drive around in a cart to support them. Once their round is over, give out the prizes and hand the cards into the pro shop to have the order of merit updated.

Futures Event support at other HB clubs

Our juniors will represent Hastings Golf Club and themselves at the Futures and other HB fixture events. Some of our juniors would have played in these events several times yet for some of our juniors this maybe their first event so may need a familiar face and support. There would be approximately 8 events per year.

Continuity is very important in creating a strong junior structure and the Club should encourage anyone wishing to take on the role of Junior Coordinator to commit themselves to at least one year.

As mentioned above we are happy to have an individual or the role could be shared between two people.

We are looking for someone who is a good communicator and loves golf.

Please note that police vetting will be completed to ensure the protection of our young golfers.

Please contact Brett in the pro shop should you require more information on this important position.

Changes to 18th Tee Marker

Due to the feedback regarding Number 18, the yellow tees will now move forward to the front of the tee block and share a marker with the current white tee marker.

With the seasonal rough grass density in the area short of the fairway, this will hopefully allow more tee shots to reach the shorter cut grass areas.

As well as the tee change, we have extended our shorter intermediate cut further toward the tee.

We will be monitoring scoring on this hole from the same time in past years and any feedback on this change would be greatly accepted.

This change will not affect the course rating or hole stroke rating.
